Some Lesser Known Facts About Lata Mangeshkar

  • She born in a Marathi family to Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti (Shubhamati) in the princely state of Indore, at the time of British India which was the part of Central India Agency (now, Madhya Pradesh)
  • Her father Deenanath Mangeshkar was one of the best theatre actor and also a classical singer.
  • First she appear publically in 1938 at Nutan Theater in Sholapur, where she sang Raag Khambavati and two other Marathi songs.
  • In 1945 she moved to Mumbai.
  • Once Ghulam Haidar (music director) said to the producer Sashadhar Mukherjee who rejected her becouse her voice was too thin then he stated that in comming years, producers and directors would fall at Lata’s feet to sing in their movies.
  • On 27 January 1963, She sang a patriotic song “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo” against the backdrop of the Sino-Indian war. The song brought Jawaharlal Nehru (the then Prime Minister of India) to tears.
  • With Music Director Laxmikant Pyarelal she sang a maximum number of songs (712).
  • On her 90th birthday in 2019, the Government of India honoured her with the title “Daughter of the Nation”.
