Ludwig Guttmann, his full name is Sir Ludwig Guttmann. He was born on July 3, 1899, Tost, Germany which is now Toszek, Poland] and died on March 18, 1980 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England. He was a German-born English neurosurgeon. He was also the founder of the Paralympic Games.
He studied in University of Freiburg in 1924 and subsequently became a leading neurosurgeon. He was a Jewish but after rises of Nazis he left Germany in 1939 and moved to England. In 1944 he become the head of the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury he retired from there only in 1966.
On July 29, 1948, He conducted an event for physically challenged people that coincided the opening of the Para-Olympic Games in London. In 1952 this event become international and Guttman found International Stocke Mandelille Games Committee. (The organization subsequently underwent several name changes before merging with the International Sports Organisation for the Disabled [ISOD] in 2004 to become the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation.)
